SUMMARY:Let's Talk About It: On-line Zoom Conversation Group
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us to chew over articles in the February issue of Christian Courier! There are lots of interesting articles\, but this month we’ll start with the page 1 story “Cautious Hope in Venezuela.” Can you see parallel ways Canadian Christians respond to political and social tensions? Could our churches be becoming “vaccinated against politics?” Is that always unhealthy? Michael DeMoor’s short piece on “Moral Panics” offers an angle on this as well. (Interested in the political possibilities? We may host a separate Zoom discussion with Kathy Vandergrift and Matthijs Kronemeijer to unpack their articles referencing Bill C-9. Email us for information! \nFor Christian Courier online\, go to: https://www.christiancourier.ca \nIt’s great to read Christian Courier online\, but we also recommend it as a physical paper you can hold in your hands. Consider subscribing to Christian Courier today! If your church is interested in having paper copies\, please reach out here.  \n  \nFor more info & a Zoom link\, contact: nvlettinga@yahoo.ca \nFacilitators: Neil & Virginia Lettinga

SUMMARY:Reckoning with Our Humanity: How Chronic Illness and Disability Tell Us Who We Are
DESCRIPTION:Chronic illness and disability can be transformative experiences within the human lifespan. Yet\, these experiences can also reveal taken-for-granted norms concerning what it means to be human: What does it mean to have a “normal” or “healthy” body? What do we need to flourish? What is most essential about us? Who are we in relation to others? Such questions contain ontological (what is the nature of being?) and ethical (what should we do?) dimensions. In their own ways\, both medicine and theology provide answers to these questions through systems of belief and practice. \nIn this presentation\, Dr. Devan Stahl will explore how medicine and theology have shaped contemporary interpretations of disability and chronic illness and how the field of theological bioethics brings these conversations together. Drawing on her experience as a clinical ethicist and theologian\, Devan will explore how disability is understood and addressed within healthcare organizations and congregations\, and how these institutions shape our beliefs about what it means to be human. \nDr. Quentin Genuis\, an emergency physician at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver and a physician ethicist\, will provide a response.

DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us to chew over articles in the January issue of Christian Courier! SUMMARY:The End of Youth Ministry?
DESCRIPTION:Our world has changed dramatically in the past several years. The pandemic\, the political climate\, the explosion of AI\, and the overall pace of life are just some of the factors that have altered our daily routines\, including how and when we gather as a church community. \nWhile congregations have had to adapt their ministries to respond to these changing contexts\, youth ministry is an area that has notably struggled. In addition to seeing a decline in the number of participating youth\, many churches are finding that their historical methods no longer seem to be having a meaningful impact on students’ lives. \nFacilitator: Rick Zomer\, Thrive Faith Formation Ministry Consultant\,

SUMMARY:Let's Talk About It: On-line Zoom Conversation Group
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us for conversation about the October issue of Christian Courier! We expect to open by considering how Reformed Christians navigate divides; the October issue has articles about separatism in Alberta\, struggles over coal plants\, and ICE in the U.S. It is a challenge to hear one another with love! CC is also celebrating its 80th anniversary\, so we hope to hear stories about how CC has influenced and encouraged folks. What are the hopeful signs in the midst of fights and fractures in our churches and society? \nFor Christian Courier online\, go to: https://www.christiancourier.ca \nIt’s great to read Christian Courier online\, but we also recommend it as a physical paper you can hold in your hands. SUMMARY:Blessed are the Undone: a workshop on leadership and blessing in the face of changing Christian faith
DESCRIPTION:Based on research for Blessed are the Undone (New Leaf Press\, w/ co-author Peter Schuurman) Angela Reitsma Bick will candidly describe some of the triggers that have stimulated a “quiet deconstruction” of Christian faith in Canada. What long-held aspects of Christian faith are being questioned\, and why? Plenty of space will be given to facilitated small group conversation around postures and long-term approaches to foster resilient Christian faith. Expect to wonder together about the blessing of being ‘undone’ in Christ who makes all things new. \nAbout Angela\nAngela Reitsma Bick is an award-winning journalist and Editor-in-Chief of Christian Courier\, an independent Canadian publication which has deftly navigated the unceasingly-tumultuous news industry. \nNote: this workshop is co-sponsored by New Leaf Press as part of their western Canada book tour bringing the insights of Blessed are the Undone to churches and Christian schools from the prairies to Vancouver Island. Books will be available for sale at this event. \nWant to come with your council or other leadership ministry group? Contact Wilma van der Leek: wilma@crc1life.ca

SUMMARY:Finding Hope in Hospitality: A Faith-Based Conversation on Welcoming the Stranger
DESCRIPTION:This virtual event is designed not only to inform\, but to connect us in a deeper\, more grace-filled way. It is an opportunity to hear timely updates\, explore our shared biblical call to welcome the stranger\, and—perhaps most importantly—talk with one another in a spirit of respectful curiosity and faith. Through facilitated small group discussions\, we hope to foster understanding and inspire fresh imagination for what a faithful\, hope-filled response can look like in our communities.

SUMMARY:Giving Voice to Brokenness: a theology of joy and lament
DESCRIPTION:This lecture explores the paradoxical relationship between joy and suffering\, considering biblical\, theological\, and pastoral perspectives on lament as a necessary practice for spiritual health. Drawing on Scripture\, theology\, and lived experience\, we will examine how lament shapes authentic worship\, fosters communal solidarity\, and reframes mental health struggles within the life of faith. \nFacilitator: John Swinton \nHost: Regent College Evening Public Lectures

SUMMARY:Let's Talk About It: On-line Zoom Conversation Group
DESCRIPTION:For this month’s conversation\, we will begin by looking at the meditation published on the front page of the April Christian Courier: Resurrection in Ruins by Brian Walsh. How are some of the churches in Alberta seeing things? \nFor Christian Courier online\, go to: https://www.christiancourier.ca \n\nChristian Courier is accessible in paper copies as well as on-line.  Consider subscribing  – if your church is interested in having paper copies\, please reach out here. \n\n  \nFor more info & a Zoom link\, contact: nvlettinga@yahoo.ca \nFacilitators: Neil & Virginia Lettinga

SUMMARY:Let's Talk About It: On-line Zoom Conversation Group
DESCRIPTION:What can we learn about ourselves from the survey that the Christian Courier put out last month? An amazing number of people responded and there is a lot to talk about! Survey-inspired articles expand on how respondents feel about the future of the CRC in Canada and whether respondents support a distinct Canadian CRC. A short story by Allan Romkema (“Why listen when you have all the answers?”) coordinates well with CC’s musings over the answers they received.
